Southern Ohio Medical Center recently reached a new milestone in its partnership with Lifeline of Ohio’s Placenta Donation program. The team secured their 200th donation.

By choosing to donate their placentas, new mothers make a wide variety of life-changing treatments possible. Donated placentas can be used to make healing grafts, which are used for a wide range of procedures involving eye, oral and spine surgery, as well as for the treatment of difficult-to-heal wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers and burns.

“I think it’s a great accomplishment that we’ve been able to donate so many placentas and help so many people. We’ve been doing this for right around two years, and to have already reached this milestone is tremendous,” Ryan Sandlin, DO of SOMC OB/GYN Associates, said. “It’s really a testament to the kindness and generosity of our patients who have been so willing to make these donations and help others.”

Typically, the placenta is discarded. A single donated placenta, however, has the potential to heal as many as 25 people.

Any expectant mother with a planned C-section is eligible to participate, and their donation does not change any part of the delivery. There is also no cost. For more information about placenta donation, please visit https://lifelineofohio.org/get-the-facts/placenta-donation/.
