September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Did you know that besides non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in men in the United States? Early detection is crucial and could save a life!
We have all been touched by cancer in some way. Wendi Waugh, SOMC Administrative Director of Cancer and Infusion Services, has been promoting prostate screenings this month and has been especially affected by prostate cancer in her own life. She wants the community to know early detection can save lives.
Thirty-two years ago, Wendi lost her father to the disease at only 46 years old. She wants to remind the community that men aged 50-70 (or 45 with a family history should have their PSA checked once a year). This simple screening can save a life.
Potential symptoms of prostate cancer include:
- Urinating often, especially at night
- Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn’t go away
- Weak or interrupted flow of urine
- Trouble emptying the bladder completely
- Pain or burning during urination or ejaculation
- Blood in the urine or semen
The SOMC Urology Associates and SOMC Cancer Center will offer FREE prostate screenings on Wednesday, September 18, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. during this special month.
Screenings are available to:
- Men ages 50-75
- Men aged 45+ who have a family history
There’s still time to call the SOMC Care Line at 740-356-CARE to schedule your free screening.
