Clinical Trials
The SOMC Cancer Center offers access to clinical trials through the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). Through this partnership, patients are eligible to participate in National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored trials with the goal of improving the treatment of cancer and the development of new medical knowledge. Our clinicians at our cancer treatment center are committed to translating research into new and better options for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Oncology clinical trials are studies that evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs and strategies treating cancer. Today’s most advanced cancer treatments started as clinical trials. Patient participation in clinical trials is important for discovery of new therapies and techniques that may advance treatment options for future cancer patients.
What is a Clinical Trial?
Clinical trials are research studies involving people. They are the final step in a long process that begins with laboratory research and testing. Clinical trials try to answer specific questions or find ways to prevent, detect, or treat diseases or to improve care for people with diseases.
In cancer research, a clinical trial is designed to show how a certain anticancer approach – whether a promising drug or new surgery – affects the people who receive it.
