Genetic Services & Testing
The SOMC Cancer Center offers genetic services, a cancer risk assessment and genetic testing.
Identifying hereditary/genetic factors with appropriate next steps can significantly reduce the risk of certain cancers. It also can assist in identifying appropriate family members for screening, prevention, and other risk reduction strategies.
When you know your inherited risk of cancer, you and your family can take steps to:
- Reduce the risk of developing the disease
- Improve the odds of finding it early
That’s why your doctor may refer you to a certified genetic counselor trained by SOMC. The counselor can help you understand your genetic risk of cancer and explain what to expect from genetic testing. If you choose to pursue genetic testing, the testing will be coordinated through expert laboratory facilities.
Genetic counseling is provided through SOMC trained City of Hope Certified Counselors. Genetic testing is coordinated through expert laboratory facilities. Talk to your provider about next steps for you if you are interested in genetic counseling.
