Foot and ankle surgery may be used to address a variety of foot and ankle conditions from bunions to tendon tears and severe arthritis. Surgery is generally only considered after nonsurgical treatments have been attempted without success.

Bunion Surgery

A common misconception is that a bunion is simply a “bump” that can be “shaved off.” Bunions are more than a bump – they are complex 3D problems caused by an unstable joint in the middle of the foot. A bunion (hallux valgus) is a deformity of the bone or tissue around the joint at the base of the big toe or at the base of the little toe. Bunions often form when the joint is stressed for a long time. Bunions may be inherited as a family trait and may also result from arthritis.
