Positron Emission Tomography and Cat Scan (PET/CT)

The most commonly used molecular imaging procedure for diagnosing or guiding treatment is Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanning, which is used in conjunction with Computed Tomography (CT) scanning. A PET/CT scan is a noninvasive imaging technology that allows the physicians to obtain three-dimensional images to determine how organs and tissues inside the body are functioning on a molecular (cell activity) level. For a PET/CT scan the patient is injected with a small amount of a radiotracer. PET/CT is currently the most effective way to check for cancer recurrence. It can be used to determine whether chemotherapy or other treatments are working as intended. PET/CT scans can detect onset of neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases.

SOMC is setting new standards in clinical confidence with our GE Discovery MI – the Discovery MI is the next evolution in whole body PET/CT platform, bringing clinically-relevant innovations in an evolutionary platform designed to open doors to new and advanced procedure possibilities in a non-invasive diagnostic imaging. Many of the subsystems bring advances in quantitative PET imaging, single PET/CT organ imaging, managing patient breathing and cardiac movement, PET and CT iterative reconstruction technologies and workflow efficiency, while providing the highest PET sensitivity in the industry.

  • PET/CT oncology, and cardiology services are provided to outpatients.
  • PET/CT Cardiac exams are provided for Outpatients and Inpatients.

PET/CT Department/Staff

PET/CT is located SOMC Main campus 1805 27th street Portsmouth, Ohio 45662. PET/CT is staffed with Board Certified Radiologists. Technologist registered by the American Registry Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), Certified by Nuclear Medicine Technologists Certification Board (CNMT) (PET), Licensed by the State of Ohio.

PET/CT is overseen by a Radiation Safety Officer, Health Physicist Team, and Radiation Safety Committee and Ohio Department of Health.
